Impasse in Chevron LNG Strikes as Talks Fail; Australia Tribunal to Decide
Negotiations between Chevron and unions regarding strikes at two liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Western Australia have come to an unsuccessful conclusion. The affected facilities, Wheatstone and Gorgon, are responsible for approximately 7% of the world's LNG supply. Despite what Chevron described as "meaningful negotiations" this week, unions representing workers at these facilities have persistently demanded terms that exceed industry standards.
With no resolution in sight, the matter is now headed to the Fair Work Commission, an Australian workplace tribunal, for adjudication. This tribunal is set to convene on Friday to review the dispute and make a decision on whether to intervene and halt the ongoing strikes. These strikes began on September 8 and escalated to two 24-hour work stoppages over the past weekend.
A swift decision from the tribunal is anticipated, potentially on the same day or in the following week. Chevron had sought the intervention of the Fair Work Commission after previous talks with the Offshore Alliance, a coalition of two unions, broke down.
The labor strikes at Wheatstone and Gorgon have disrupted operations and raised concerns about the stability of LNG supply from this region. Chevron has consistently emphasized its commitment to maintaining safe and reliable operations amidst the ongoing labor disputes.
