UK Plans One of Europe's Largest Hydrogen Plants in Green Energy Hub
Torridge District Council in the southwest of England has allocated £15.6 million for the construction of the Clean Maritime Innovation Centre at Appledore in North Devon. The center aims to collaborate with shipbuilders in constructing vessels powered by clean energy. The Tower Group, in proximity, plans to build a hydrogen production plant to supply fuel for these vessels. Construction of the center is scheduled to commence in late 2024 and conclude by early 2026, pending formal approval.
The council envisions the development establishing Torridge and wider northern Devon as a global-leading research and development destination for innovation in clean maritime technology and supporting industries.
The Tower Group has submitted documentation to Torridge District Council, outlining its intent to build the hydrogen plant, with a planning application expected soon. The initial pilot plant, generating 5 megawatts, could power two boats, with plans for expansion to 50 megawatts, covering a 10-15 acre site. If the proposals proceed, the long-term plan involves generating 500 megawatts on an 80-100 acre site, making it one of Europe's largest such facilities, although a specific timeframe is yet to be confirmed.
