Shell Conducts First Cruise Ship LNG Bunkering at Port of Gibraltar
Shell has successfully completed the first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for a cruise ship at the Port of Gibraltar. The bunkering was performed on the Silver Nova, the first vessel in the Nova class series for Silversea Cruises, which recently embarked on its maiden voyage.
This milestone also marked the first "in-port" LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Gibraltar. Shell highlighted its commitment to developing Gibraltar as a key LNG bunkering hub, providing bunkering services both within the port and at anchorage. The bunkering operation was a collaborative effort involving Royal Caribbean Group, Anthony Veder, and the Gibraltar Port Authority.
Royal Caribbean Group has been actively pursuing decarbonization strategies, including biofuel testing in Europe. The company began testing sustainable biofuels last year and expanded its trials to two additional ships, Symphony of the Seas and Celebrity Apex, this summer in Europe. These sustainable biofuels are produced by refining renewable raw materials such as waste oils and fats, blending them with fuel oil to create a cleaner and more environmentally friendly alternative fuel, accredited by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).
