The Go-Ahead Group, a leading British bus and rail operator, has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses in the Gatwick Airport, Crawley, and Horley area. The pioneering project involves the deployment of 54 zero-emission buses, supported by the largest liquid hydrogen refuelling station in Europe. This significant investment, totaling £30 million, aims to revolutionize public transport by providing sustainable and long-range solutions for intensive local routes.
The fleet, which will be one of the largest hydrogen bus fleets in the UK, will initially consist of 20 single-decker GB Kite Hydroliner buses manufactured by Wrightbus. These vehicles offer the capability to cover long distances and carry heavy loads, making them ideal for the demanding routes around Gatwick that operate 24/7 throughout the year. Over the next 18 months, an additional 34 buses will be added to the fleet, solidifying its position as a key player in the transition to zero-emission transportation.
The innovative aspect of this project lies in the creation of a liquid hydrogen refuelling station at the Metrobus Crawley depot. Owned and operated by Air Products, a leading industrial gas company, this refuelling station represents the first of its kind for buses in Europe. Once fully operational, it will have the capacity to provide fuel for over 100 buses per day, establishing a cornerstone of sustainable refuelling infrastructure.
The launch event, held on June 29th, was attended by the Minister for Roads and Local Transport, Richard Holden, along with various stakeholders from the region. The occasion also included a presentation and ceremony at the Crawley bus depot, emphasizing the commitment to reducing emissions in the local community. The event showcased the Go-Ahead Group's dedication to achieving a net-zero future in transportation and creating a safer and cleaner environment for passengers and the surrounding areas.
The introduction of the hydrogen bus fleet represents a significant milestone for the Go-Ahead Group, marking its entry into the hydrogen-powered vehicle sector. This strategic move aligns with the company's overarching goal of investing in sustainable transport solutions that benefit both the environment and local communities. By incorporating hydrogen technology into their operations, the Go-Ahead Group aims to reduce carbon emissions and pave the way for a more sustainable public transportation system.
Surrey County Council has also played a vital role in supporting this initiative by investing £16.4 million to introduce 34 hydrogen fuel cell buses. This contribution helps create one of the largest hydrogen bus fleets in the UK, contributing to the council's commitment to becoming a net-zero county by 2050. The council intends to enhance the bus service by implementing bus priority measures and real-time passenger information systems, further encouraging residents to opt for cleaner and greener bus travel.
The launch of the groundbreaking hydrogen bus fleet and refuelling station in the Gatwick area represents a significant step forward in decarbonizing public transport. The Go-Ahead Group's commitment to investing in a net-zero future, along with the support of Surrey County Council, showcases the potential of hydrogen technology in meeting the challenge of reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This transformative project paves the way for a greener and more sustainable future for public transportation in the region and beyond.
