The LNG Canada project, led by Shell, has achieved a significant milestone in the construction of Canada's first LNG export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia. The project reached a critical phase with the arrival of the last module by ship from its fabrication yard in Zhuhai, China.
Fluor Corporation, in partnership with JGC Corporation, has played a vital role in the LNG Canada project, responsible for engineering, procurement, fabrication, and delivery of modules, as well as the construction of infrastructure, utilities, marine structures, and LNG storage tanks. On July 17, the final module arrived, completing the module fabrication program for the project.
The module fabrication program involved the delivery and installation of 215 modules of varying sizes at the project site. The first major module, weighing over 5,000 tons and standing 145 feet tall, was received in March 2022. This achievement showcases the success of the innovative approach to modular construction, allowing for efficient construction activities on-site while minimizing environmental impacts and collaborating with local communities and skilled workforces.
Jim Breuer, Group President of Fluor's Energy Solutions business, emphasized the importance of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the global energy transition and expressed pride in building Canada's inaugural large-scale LNG export facility. The facility will contribute to global energy security by displacing higher carbon forms of energy.
Pierre Bechelany, President of Fluor's LNG business, hailed the completion of the module fabrication program as a major achievement for the LNG Canada project. This significant milestone highlights the project's progress and exemplifies the success of modular construction methods.
The LNG Canada project's completion of the module fabrication program signifies a crucial step forward in the development of the LNG export facility, further supporting Canada's role in the energy transition and reinforcing its position in the global energy market.
