Switzerland-based technology company ABB has been awarded a contract to provide integrated automation, electrical, and digital solutions for Phase 1 of the Rio Grande LNG facility (RGLNG Phase 1) in Brownsville, Texas. The project is developed by U.S. energy company NextDecade, with construction led by U.S. firm Bechtel Energy under an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreement.
RGLNG Phase 1 will leverage ABB's products and services to ensure the safe and efficient operation of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production. The scope of ABB's involvement includes automation control systems, digital electrification components, and industrial drives. These technologies will enable RGLNG Phase 1 to optimize production assets, enhance energy efficiency, and operate more sustainably.
Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries, highlighted the role of innovation and collaboration in addressing the energy trilemma of providing affordable, accessible, and sustainable energy. ABB's technology will contribute to the automation, electrification, and digitalization of the Rio Grande project, further supporting global LNG exports and contributing to global energy security.
RGLNG Phase 1 comprises three liquefaction trains and supporting infrastructure, representing the largest greenfield project financing in U.S. history, according to NextDecade. Once fully operational, Phase 1 is expected to produce 17.6 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG.
NextDecade reached the final investment decision (FID) for Phase 1 of the Rio Grande LNG export facility in July 2023 and officially commenced construction in October 2023. The facility has secured 16.2 mtpa of long-term binding LNG sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) with prominent entities, including TotalEnergies, Shell NA LNG, ENN LNG, Engie, ExxonMobil LNG Asia Pacific, Guangdong Energy Group, China Gas Hongda Energy Trading, Galp Trading, and Itochu Corporation.
